What is Mario and Luigi"s last name?

If you’re in your 20’s, there is a fine chance that Mario and Luigi games have been about in your whole life. We don’t know what we’d do without Mario and Luigi games. There are several of us, I’m sure, who’d see it as an indication of the coming apocalypse. However, the majority of us are merely happy having the little guys around, fixing the plumbing.

The influence of Mario and Luigi games might be counter productive, however, as for years my only understanding of Italian society came from the Mario and Luigi games series. In reality, when I had my first Italian training (aged around 11) I did my best Mario impression when delivering my lines to the rest of the class. To his eternal credit, my teacher never once chided me with a demand “do it again, and now be less of a berk!”

We’ve even seen solo Luigi spin-offs over the years. Given that Luigi began life as a palette swap of Mario (‘palette swap’ is an antiquated expression dating back to when games had very limited memory and thus not very many sprites appeared per level, so new characters/harder bad guys were denoted by re-coloured sprites. More badass than the standard white ones, and also the ‘Neon Knights’ (that’s what I call them, anyway) on Golden Axe III were positively invincible, despite their extremely questionable choice of battle attire – you may almost imagine Death Adder (with Skeletor’s voice, for some reason) armouring his minions thus: Mwahahahaha!!! You will be my entry-level bad guys, which means you wear dull grey and brown, you’ll be protected, camouflaged and you will not look like a berk, no matter how bad your Italian is! But you, my elite and unstoppable personal guard, YOU shall be clad in Neon Disco Pink! Mwahahahaha!”) He’s done very well for himself indeed.

In the Mario and Luigi games tie-in cartoon, that Appeared shown on Saturday morning along with such greats as ‘Jayce & The Wheeled Warriors’ ‘Ulysses 31’ ‘Visionaries’ and ‘M.A.S.K’ (three points for every theme song you possibly can remember) Luigi was presented as a bit of a bumbler, a fool even, actually, I’ve just this second raised a childhood memory of being forced by my friend Jimmy to be Luigi as we acted out the cartoon (aged about 7) and him yelling at me (in Berkish Italian) for having crumbs in my pocket. There, that’s how far back Mario and Luigi games go if you’re my age, there was scarcely a time without them. The mere mention of Mario and Luigi games takes us on a trip down Sends us on a nostalgia trip, so lets-a-go!

Today, Mario and Luigi are embracing a more modern direction, which is terrific. Though, should you be a parent who’s a little older than me, let me set the record straight on a few things 1) You really won’t learn Italian by playing Mario 2) There is nothing to be learned about plumbing from these games 3) he/she’s going to seem like a berk if they do the accent. That is all.

School musical spared by Roots drummer Questlove

Musician Ahmir Khalib Thompson, often known as Questlove, has offered to assist to fund the annual musical at his old school, the Philadelphia High School for Innovative and The stage Arts (CAPA), it is revealed this week.

Questlove, who plays drums for that Grammy-award winning Hip Hop band ‘The Roots’ (the group presently occupying the spot as the house band for United states talk show ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’), is also a exceedingly sought after record producer, music journalist and DJ.

The 42-year-old drummer heard that his school was being forced to cancel their 2013 musical as a result of budget cuts and opted to make sure that next year’s show wouldn’t suffer a similar destiny.

Thompson actually called the college’s principal, Johnny C. Whaley, JR and chose a “sizeable donation” to make sure that the show would go ahead next year.

Because of Questlove’s bounteousness as well as the efforts of other donors (like local lawyers Charles Peruto and Abe Kasbo) the college’s annual musical custom is predicted to resume in 2014.

Whaley told KYW Newsradio that Thompson has “reached out to our school in the past and given us goods”, he went on to say that “you have to know that we’re an extremely close-knit organization, when our alumni see things changing, whenever they have the economic ability to help, they reach out to us.”

The annual event, that is a necessary platform both for CAPA as an institution and for young talent in the Philadelphia area, costs about $65,000 (approximately £42,000) to provide, but is not part of CAPA’s annual budget. “There’s a certain standard of brilliance we now have,” says Whaley of the cost, “We don’t concede when it relates to production”

The prior show was funded by The Home and School Association, following a grant from The William Penn Foundation.

CAPA is noted for the fostering of creative talent and many of the school’s graduates have gone on to flourishing careers in arts and entertainment. Notable alumni include record-breaking RnB vocal set ‘Boyz II Men’, author and ‘Scrubs’ co-producer Angela Nissel and former James Brown and Sting bassist Christian McBride as well as a lot more.

Questlove met and befriended MC and fellow ‘Roots’ cofounder Tariq Trotter (better known as ‘Black Thought’) while both were students at CAPA.

Ray Harryhausen special effects supremo dies at 92

Legendary Hollywood special effects man Ray Harryhausen passed away in London’s Hammersmith hospital yesterday. He was 92 years old.

The animator and industry pioneer was distinguished for his innovation of new moving picture procedures, as well as a cavalcade of iconic and unforgettable screen creations.

Harryhausen’s mold work and unique beast designs could be seen in such type of movies as ‘Clash of the Titans’, ‘Jason & The Argonauts’, ‘The Valley of Gwangi’ and his ‘Sinbad’ trilogy, among a great many others.

Tributes from a mixture of film industry specialists have poured in over the past 24 hours.

Oscar-winning ‘Wallace & Gromit’ creator Nick Park called him “my mentor and inspiration since my earliest childhood memories”.

George Lucas and Steven Spielberg both shiningly referred to Harryhausen as an inspiration, while James Cameron, who’s movies include Harryhausen-esque animal features like ‘Aliens’ and ‘Terminator’ said sci fi filmmakers have been “standing on the shoulders of a giant” due to Ray’s labor.

Peter Lord, of Aardman Animations, also noted that Harryhausen was “a one-guy industry and a one-man genre”.

Himself empowered by ‘King Kong’s special effects creator Willis O’Brien, adolescent Harryhausen started playing with model making and stop-motion work in the 1930’s.

After he enlisted in the U.S Army in 1942, Harryhausen worked on models and artwork for U.S Army magazine ‘Yank’ and acted under upcoming ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ director Frank Capra to produce army-training films.

After the hostilities, Harryhausen was able to work alongside his hero Willis O’Brien, on what could be his breakthrough picture ‘Mighty Joe Young’.

In 1953, Harryhausen’s solo effort ‘The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms’ (an adaptation of a quick tale by Ray’s lifetime friend Ray Bradbury) grew to become a box office accomplishment. Next, the 1955 production of ‘It Came From Beneath the Sea’ marked the best collaboration between Harryhausen and Producer Charles H. Schneer, the man who would succeed with him on his most popular movies over the following three decades.

Harryhausen partnered throughout the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, creating many massively admired creatures and fantastic, dream like adventure sequences. ‘Clash of the Titans’, released in 1981, is considered by many to become his magnum opus.

In 1992, Harryhausen received a special Oscar for his achievements and offerings to the art of cinema.

In 2002, Harryhausen partnered alongside animators Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh to finish ‘The Tortoise & The Hare’, a fairy tale short that Ray had begun in 1952.

In 2007, he executive-produced a short film based on E.A Poe’s ‘The Pit & The Pendulum’.

In his autobiography, Harryhausen says “Looking back over time I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved in so many exciting projects, the best of which I assume did mature and develop into full-length feature movies”.

He donated his entire personal collection of models, which consisted of around 20,000 scrupulously hand crafted models, to the National Media Museum in Bradford in 2010. It is here, in addition to within the imaginations of these he continues to inspire, that Ray Harryhausen’s inheritance will live on.

Stephen King Donates to Edgar Allen Poe Sculpture Fund

Recently, the endorsed ‘Your Town’ internet site for Boston, Massachusetts, USA broke the story that bestselling novelist Stephen King, along with his wife, writer Tabitha King, have donated $5,000 to the Poe Foundation of Boston.

The cash is going towards the Foundation’s plans to erect a large statue of that American writer in Edgar Allen Square, not far from Poe’s birthplace.

Foundation Head Dan Currie was quoted as saying that there was “some disbelief” as the weighty donation arrived on April Fool’s day.

Artiste Stefanie Rocknak designed the planned statue. She was preferred from 265 possible candidates. Besides being an award-winning affiliate from the Sculptor’s Guild, Rocknak is also a professor of Philosophy based in New York.

The anticipated piece is known as ‘Poe Returning to Boston’ and depicts the novelist carrying a suitcase of ideas, here rendered accurately inside the forms of (amongst other things) a raven plus a ‘telltale’ heart.

The statue is going to be finished and unveiled once the foundation can raise its proposed goal of $175,000.

Prior to the Kings’ generous contribution, the venture has received a $25,000 donation from the Highland Street Foundation as well as the $10,000 gift from Poe collector Susan Jaffe Tane. In addition, Poe admirers and other involved parties have communally donated some $5,000.

Widely attributed as a innovator of that detective story, also as a master of thriller, trepidation and macabre horror, Edgar Allen Poe is one #of the# giants of Us literature.

However, during his existence, Poe’s affiliation with the city’s literary and cultural elite was often a tense one. His production was repeatedly criticized and he found himself ostracized from particular literary circles.

Stephen King, who originates from Portland, Maine, has published numerous novels, novellas and online eBooks, most of them inside the horror genre. The novelist has also published almost two hundred short stories, an art form partially pioneered by Poe. King’s publications have sold more than 350 million copies worldwide and have frequently been adapted for film and television. He is considered one of the world’s most victorious writers.

Tabitha King has published 8 novels and several poetry anthologies. She is also a photographer.

“We are thrilled and tremendously grateful to possess the support of the Kings” Dan Currie told Boston.com recently.

For more information, or a chance to donate, visit the project’s official web site.

An Afternoon Wasted

I was going to put in writing about gaming Earphones, making sure that in case you planned on buying one, or you wanted to learn further about them, you can use this article. I’ve departed from that somewhat (OK a lot), and here is why.

When I write articles or reviews (should you Google me you will find that I have written a good deal), I usually use what we writers call a ‘framing device’, which is, a nice beginning/end to the piece that lightly eases you into it, usually via a joke or anecdote. This makes it easier for me to write (I’m not the most technically savvy bloke on Earth) and easier that you can read. I want to buy the products, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a laugh or 2 , does it?

I had a little think about how to frame a piece of writing about Headsets, and came up using a pretty good idea. The great thing about writing on the internet is that no matter which you write about may be immediately accessed, so I decided that I would frame my Headsets article around ‘The Angry German Kid’ viral video, as an example of the kind of people who shouldn’t buy Earphones. If you have not seen the ‘Angry German Kid’ video, it depicts a juvenile German boy attempting to learn the game ‘Unreal Tournament’ and screaming wildly when it does not work. Developing humorous subtitles to accompany the boy’s increasingly deranged ranting has become a pastime beloved by identical those who do those ‘Hitler reacts’ videos (actually, there’s even a crossover of both).

In order to learn more about this video, I searched the standard places, but found nothing save for dodgy translations (and, despite being part German myself, I can’t speak a word) and misinformation claiming the boy had been sectioned in a psychiatric organization. Eventually, after a long and exhaustive hunt, I discovered the facts about the Angry German Kid, and a lot more than I needed for a short article about Earphones at that.

Because it seems, AGK’s real name is Leopold and he is the culprit for numerous comedy ‘characters’, including ‘Der Echte Gangster’ (a parody of white would-be gangsters) ‘Metaler’ (a parody of ‘cookie monster’ heavy metal singers) and ‘Das Comeback’ where he plays an oafish, but well-meaning, moron. It appears that, the boy was deceived by a German television show, who spread his AGK video (itself intended to send up the (then current) debate in Germany regarding whether violent video games ought to be banned or not. Sadly, the child has resisted making more videos since AGK went viral and he was cruelly bullied at school. As it seems, you are able to quite gladly buy any Headsets you would like, without turning into an irate German. And I wasted a complete afternoon finding that out for you. If you want to see a genuine freakout, go to Youtube and search ‘Greatest Freakout Ever’ and no, I don’t have time to learn the tale behind it for you.

Kindle Fire HD Review

Latest news – With numerous different variations of a kindle already, and making its name as the greatest e-book reader, taking hundreds and thousands of books with you. But this representation was plagiarized by every pc tablet on the marketplace and superseeded, so. The kindle is now using a full HD colour screen, with apps and games, mirroring competition and using the android Platform. This provides you an idea of what you can be expecting

What happens when the oddball sleeper hit gets a big budget sequel? Today we take the newest Kindle, the Kindle Fire HD, out for a spin, in order to find out…

Introduction

Apple’s iPad is the biggest selling tablet computer ever. Surprised? No, neither was I. But you might be when you hear that the Amazon Kindle Fire is right after it.

At the time of its release, I deemed the Kindle Fire to be a standard, reliable tablet that offered a good product at a great price. In fact, I still do. Somehow, without being especially showy or glamorous, the Kindle Fire proved itself to be a massive success. So what happens when the oddball sleeper hit gets a big budget sequel?

Today we take the newest Kindle, the Kindle Fire HD, out for a spin, in order to find out…

The Specs

The 8.9-inch version of the Kindle Fire HD is something of a beast. It runs Android 4.0, it has up to 32GB of memory, it employs a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and has a beautiful screen, perfect for movies or books.

In addition, the Kindle Fire’s successor has a dual-antenna for picking up WiFi signals, making it one of the best tablets for Internet use in the world. Oh, it even has a special built-in sound system designed by Dolby Surround. Once again, it isn’t the highest performance tablet around, but this time it is pretty close.

The Price

I am pleased to tell you that the Kindle Fire HD is still an affordable tablet, even with all the new features added on. For just under £200, you can get all of the above and a whole lot more. It’s a sense of value that really makes everything that much better.

The Performance

The Kindle Fire HD performs very well. Movie/web playback is great, the eReader is superlative and the Internet access is generally fast and reliable. The HDMI output works like a charm and delivers true HD that is simply stunning to behold. The sound on the HD’s media playback is detailed and clear and the overall feel is of a much more expensive tablet.

Integrated support for Twitter, Facebook and various other bits and bobs is a welcome feature, as is the extra-long battery life, which seems to go on longer than the Duracell Bunny’s wedding night.

A minor drawback comes from the fact that Amazon won’t let you permanently download movies if you’re a citizen of the UK. Apparently our cousins across the pond can, but we’re not allowed, for some reason! You can upload your own movies, but those taken from iTunes won’t work. LOVEfilm seems to be your only option. In fact, the biggest problems with the new Fire are all to do with a lack of content. You have a beautiful screen, with great sound and the memory to process whatever you need and then most of that content is annexed from the user via greedy corporate BS? Sort it out, Amazon!

What Other Users Say

You’d expect Amazon.co.uk to be suspiciously positive in their opinions of Amazon’s flagship product, but the reviews are actually more of a mixed bag than I was expecting. Reviews like those published by ‘Dant’ (5/5), ‘Stormcat’ (5/5), ‘MarieJ30’ (5/5) and ‘Von’ (5/5) are all gushing with praise and satisfied customer-ness.

However, the Kindle Fire HD has its critics as well and users like ‘A. Murphy’ (1/5), ‘Craig Cable’ (1/5) and ‘Rosco’ (3/5) all criticize, amongst other things, the lack of movie availability, lack of camera and a general feeling that the default Internet browser ‘Amazon Silk’ is anything but smooth.

Overall, of 842 reviews, 457 of them are listed at 4/5 or higher. This is actually not quite the score I would expect, especially since my own experiences were so positive.

Our Verdict

Despite a lack of content and the usual hiccups, the Kindle Fire HD is a massive improvement on its predecessor and is, in terms of price, efficiency and reliability, probably the best value tablet around today. If you’re looking for a high spec, yet affordable, tablet, it should come down to a choice between this and the Nexus.

All in all, the Kindle Fire HD is a meticulously designed tablet that at once builds on a strong past and paves the way for an even stronger future. An excellent tablet that offers great value, great performance and much more besides.

Does a human ear has the ability to cancel background sound and filter only voice?

Because you’ve walked down any street, anywhere within the United Kingdom, at any point in the past decade, you will know the Britain of the early twenty first Century is noisy, crowded and busy.

People ferry past you with headsets on, cell phones in front of their faces and from time to time, seemingly chatting to themselves (until you notice the Bluetooth receiver). Many is a time I have heard someone talking and rotating to deal with them, only to see that they aren’t talking to me at all. There are more vehicles #on the# road and there are more roads for the cars to operate on. Yes, this land is really a busy place and sometimes you intend to just shut all of it out.

You may be attempting to hear a client’s requests in your hands free headset, or you could just want to forget everything else around you and hear music. For these reasons (and a few more) noise reducing headsets are growing in popularity at an alarming rate. In fact, they’re an excellent invention, and a essential one.

But how does such wondrous technology work?

Well, to say it simply, there are a couple of types of noise reducing headsets. The 1st is pretty primitive. Standard noise reduction occurs when you place anything in (or over) your ears. In fact, this straightforward fact is merely really employed through the design from the headphones themselves. When they cover your ears, or obstruct them with ear buds, then you are accomplishing basic noise reduction. We’ll call that ‘passive’ noise reduction.

The second type, we’ll call ‘active’ noise reduction. With this sort, a special technology is used. Active noise cancelling headsets generate a field of white noise around the ear, which acts as something of a vacuum and drowns out virtually any sound round the wearer. These noise reducing headphones are useful and they work a treat if you happen to live near any road works.

There is, of course, a draw back. With some noise cancelling earpieces, you even have a tough time hearing, well, anything at all. This is fine when the ambient sound is limited to kids listening to chavvy music on their phones, or else uppity couples arguing (so violently that you believe ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show’ could be holding secret auditions somewhere) and noisy delivery trucks trundling past, but it may be a bit of a downer when you don’t hear oncoming cars, or phrases like “Ow! You stepped on my foot!”

So that’s the way it works.

Does a human ear has the ability to cancel background sound and filter only voice?

The Empire Strikes Again: Disney Closes LucsArts, sacks all employees

Disney have closed up the LucasArts game studio, unexpectedly cancelling all forthcoming games and laying off all employees, it was reported in the last few days.

Disney will still take advantage of the LucasArts name to license games, but the studio will not be developing any new games and all existing products have been scrapped.

The multimedia entertainment corporation, which purchased LucasArts, along with the movie company Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4.05 Billion, informed the employees of their decision this morning. The move is expected to force about a hundred and fifty employees into unemployment.

A spokesperson for Disney said, “After evaluating our situation within the games market, we have decided to move LucasArts from an inside development to a licensing business model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader collection of quality Star Wars games.”

LucasArts was a outstanding games designer, principally acknowledged for creating Star Wars tie-in games (two of which, ‘Star Wars 1313’ and ‘Star Wars: First Assault’ are high profile victims of this shutdown).

The corporation was moreover extremely influential to the expansion of the ‘adventure games’ genre in the 80’s and 90’s, producing such notable works as ‘The Secret of Monkey Island’, ‘Grim Fandango’ and ‘Maniac Mansion’.

Gamer response continues to be vocal and damning, with angry blogs, Facebook updates and Tweets hitting the net within hours of the announcement.

Regardless of the outcry, this move isn’t without precedent. Last September LucasArts blocked all employing and extra product bulletins, an action which came right before the corporation’s sale to Disney the next month.

However, throughout the initial buyout, Disney had confirmed that all employees would remain in their present positions. Immediately subsequent the changeover, a company spokesperson is reported as saying that “for the time being all initiatives are business as usual. We are excited about all the possibilities that Disney brings.”

Although the company’s previous few game titles had received mixed reviews and only small sales success, hopes were high for their upcoming releases.

It is conceivable that Disney will outsource the development of the products to other studios, but it seems more likely that the company will now put its efforts towards licensing various tie-in titles for that as-yet unnamed ‘Star Wars VII’, film scheduled for release in 2015.
